Two things I keep thinking about today:
1. When I was a junior in high school, I saw “film studies” on a list of majors in a University of Minnesota brochure and decided that was what I wanted to do. My dad rolled his eyes, ordered me to at least double-major with something more practical, and brought me home DVDs of Casablanca and Citizen Kane to start studying.
2. A couple of months ago, as I complained to my dad on the phone about my stifling suburban day job, he said, “Well, every interview you hear with a famous artist or writer, they always talk about the terrible jobs they had to live through before they got to where they are now.”
Thanks, Dad. Happy Father’s Day.
